Prime Freight Solutions is recruiting an experienced HGV Tramping Driver to join our general haulage operation based in Banbury. This is a strong opportunity for a professional driver with solid multi drop experience, good route planning skills and the confidence to work across a varied national transport network.

This role will suit a reliable Class 1 driver who is comfortable being out during the week, managing nights out, completing deliveries safely and representing the business well at customer sites. You will be working from Banbury, with regular movements across the Midlands, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Drivers based in or around Rugby, Bicester, Buckingham, Telford, Burton upon Trent and Chesterfield are encouraged to apply.

We are looking for someone who understands the pace of UK general haulage. The work can involve multiple drops, collections, RDCs, customer depots, industrial estates and business parks. You will need to be organised, calm under pressure and able to keep communication clear with the transport office.

This is not a job for someone who wants the same run every day. It is a proper tramping driver position, covering a mix of planned routes and live transport requirements. One week you may be running out through Rugby and Bicester, the next you could be delivering towards Telford, Burton upon Trent or Chesterfield. The Tramping Driver Role

As a Tramping Driver, you will be responsible for carrying out general haulage deliveries and collections, with a focus on safe, timely and professional service. You will be away from base during the working week, taking your required rest periods in the vehicle and working in line with drivers’ hours regulations.

The work will include multi drop deliveries, so previous experience in this area is essential. You should be comfortable planning your day, checking paperwork, liaising with customers, managing delivery times and keeping the transport office updated if anything changes on the road.

Loads and routes may vary, with deliveries and collections across Banbury, Rugby, Bicester, Buckingham, Burton upon Trent, Telford, Chesterfield and wider UK locations. You will be expected to complete vehicle checks, secure loads correctly and maintain a professional standard at all times.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive HGV Class 1 vehicles on general haulage routes from the Banbury operation.
• Complete tramping work, including nights out during the week as required.
• Carry out multi drop deliveries and collections safely and efficiently.
• Deliver to customer sites, depots, RDCs, industrial estates and commercial premises.
• Plan and manage daily routes in line with transport office instructions.
• Complete daily vehicle checks and report any defects promptly.
• Ensure loads are checked, safe and secure before departure.
• Maintain accurate delivery paperwork, PODs and transport documentation.
• Use digital tachograph and follow all drivers’ hours and working time rules.

Requirements

• Valid HGV Class 1 / Category C+E licence.
• Valid Driver CPC qualification.
• Valid digital tachograph card.
• Proven multi drop experience is required.
• Previous tramping experience is strongly preferred.
• Good understanding of UK road networks and general haulage operations.
• Knowledge of drivers’ hours, tachograph rules and working time regulations.
• Ability to complete paperwork accurately and manage PODs correctly.
• Professional attitude when dealing with customers and transport staff.
• Reliable, punctual and able to work with minimal supervision.
• Comfortable with nights out in the vehicle during the week.
• No serious driving offences; licence checks will apply.

Working Pattern

This is a tramping position, so you should expect to be out during the week, with nights out as part of the role. Exact start times, finish times and weekly patterns will depend on customer requirements, route planning and legal driving hours.

The transport team will aim to plan work sensibly and keep drivers informed. However, as with most general haulage roles, some flexibility is needed. Deliveries may include early starts, long-distance trunking, regional multi drop work and collections from customer sites.
